February 6th, 2012- Well, I'm Not Dead Yet! Great Bend Kansas, Companion Sister Rupper

February 6th, 2012 Great Bend Kansas,
Companion Sister Rupper
Well, I’m not dead yet!

Hi my wonderful Utahrds! (No, I did not make that up. I've actually been called that). The Knudsen's can back me up on this one.

I hope you have all had a fabulous week.
As for Sister Rupper and I we are surviving. Sister Rupper has been sick for most of the week and so like many other weeks of my mission I have sat in our apartment going crazy. I've come to the conclusion that I must make my companions sick, or maybe it’s just being in Kansas. Or both...

During our few productive days earlier in the week we were able to go out and get a lot done. In our adventures we were blessed with 2 new investigators!!! We were in the lovely town of Hoisington where we met with one of our investigators and were now searching for “old formers” and potentials. We received a call from the Zone Leaders; Elder Allen gave us a challenge to find a new investigator by the end of the night. It was already 5 pm so we had our work cut out for us. After a very sincere prayer on our part we got busy. After knocking on another vacant house I noticed the next-door neighbors door was open. As much as I don't love tracting I kept feeling like we needed to knock on that house. I figured if nothing else they could at least tell us if anyone lived in the house next to them.

While knocking on the door we were bombarded by 5 dogs on the other side of the screen. We waited and waited. After another good knock that sent the dogs on another barking frenzy someone finally opened the door. She was a cute girl who couldn't be older than 17. Finding that her neighbors had moved I asked if she had ever seen missionaries like us before? She asked if we were part of the nun convent in Great Bend! We explained who we were and asked her if she went to a Church near by. She said she was Christian and attended the local church in town. She then said that she reads the Bible when she gets bored. :) We then introduced her to the Book of Mormon and asked her to read it. She happily accepted and we set a return appointment for next week. The Lord really does answer prayers. It was a complete miracle. Oh and our new investigators name is Myalia and she's 15. I'm excited to see her again on Wednesday.

We were also able to contact a few referrals along the way ...most from over 7 years ago. (Ridiculous). One in particular went something like this; She lived in the middle of no mans land and after much trial and error we found the house. (This was the house Sister Mendez and I were looking for when we got stuck in the mud a few weeks back.) Thankfully, this time we escaped all deceiving mud sinkholes and found the address we were searching for.

We were welcomed up the driveway by 10 dogs, 85 cats and those weird bird, geese things that Bro. and Sis. Mason had once. I think they are called guinnies or something like that. We approached the front door and after knocking a few time were greeted by an elderly lady who looked like we may have woken her up...and could really use a shower. We introduced ourselves and then asked if she had ever received the Book of Mormon she requested years ago. That question opened the floodgates and she went off!

The conversation consisted of her belief in a prophetess that lived in a mental hospital where the angel Gabriel came down and helped her write a book. She went on saying that worshiping on Sunday is damnation and that worshiping on Saturday is the only Salvation possible. People who die can come back in the form of our husbands but really be evil spirits. She also said that her nephew happens to be a member of our church.

After a good 45 minutes she answered our question that she had never requested such a thing as a Book of Mormon and did NOT want one. We did however get her to take a “Finding Faith in Christ” DVD! Just another crazy conversation in "if I was murdered out here no one would ever find me" Central Kansas. Oh the joys of being a missionary.

With a week full of weird conversations, smells, and taking wrong turns I'm still moving. I'm not dead yet so until then I'll keep going.

The gospel is so very true! It's the weirdest blessing to be here in Great Bend.

I love you all. Be safe.
Sister Kenz
