January 9th, 2012 Great Bend KS
Happy Monday everyone!
I hope you are all enjoying your Monday morning. :)
To the one and only Jenna Jean, Congratulations. I couldn't be happier for you. Know that I love you with all my heart. To everyone else, I love you as well.
This hasn't been the most eventful week but this is what I've got;
Sister Shirley Smith is 80 years old and seriously the coolest lady on the planet. She sat behind us yesterday in church (right next to my 3rd cousin :)). As people were sharing their testimonies Sister Smith would fire back with a little sly comment. One in particular; this certain brother was sharing his thoughts and said, "We're not the oldest people in the ward.... thank goodness." And Sister Smith fires back with, "No, you just act like it." I'm sure it doesn't sound half as funny as it was. But trust me it was. I lost it. I was laughing so hard. I absolutely love her.
The best part of the week was having Sister Fie'eiki grace us with her presence for exchanges. Her and her companion showed up Tuesday night and we headed out to a tiny little town where we had scheduled an appointment with a potential. Unfortunately our appointment fell through so we wondered the deserted streets for a bit where I tripped a few times (I seriously only make a fool of myself when I am around her) and were chased by a few freaky dogs. After a valiant effort we got back to the car and headed back toward Great Bend. The next morning started bright and early at 5 am with a nice "brisk" bike ride. I was almost positive my fingers were going to fall off (they didn't). Our day continued spending the afternoon contacting unknowns and less actives in Larned that hadn't been contacted in years. Its funny how the time goes by so quickly when you don't want it to. Before we knew it our day had passed and it was time for Fe to head back to Junction City. We said a heart-breaking goodbye for the next 7 months. I love that girl. She is an amazing missionary and friend. I am so grateful that she came into my life. I can't wait to see her again soon. :) She has completed her mission and is now headed home to California.
Topping off the random events of the week Sister Mendez, The Knudsen's and I celebrated King's day on Friday. I truthfully had no clue this holiday even existed till Sister Mendez entered my life. The tradition is to eat brosca (bread shaped into a circle). The catch is that somewhere within the bread is a little baby Jesus. Who ever finds Jesus in their bread has to make tamales for everyone. Fun right? I know. So Friday morning we headed to the Mexican store and purchased our brosca. Here is the cool part, the guy that was making the bread turned out to be a member. We didn't believe him at first (correction, sister Mendez didn't believe him at first. I was completely oblivious to what they were talking about) but turns out he really is. He was baptized when he was 10 in Mexico but then moved to the states and has been a lost sheep ever since. It was a miracle! We were able to give him a Book of Mormon and some pamphlets to help refresh his memory and are in the process of transferring his records here to Great Bend. The Lord really does put people in our path. :) Anyway, going back to our brosca. The store didn't have any baby Jesus figurines and were supplying firemen instead. The owner of the store was cutting off the arms and legs of these little red firemen to make it safer. I found the whole situation hilarious.
We took our brosca over to the Knudsen's that night and made a party of it. Sister Mendez found the baby Jesus dressed as a firemen first. She now has to make us all dinner. It was the most random, wonderful holiday ever.
Unfortunately Sister Mendez has been sick the last few days so she's been out cold on Nyquil and I've been getting lots of good study time in. If you haven't ever read the talk "Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ" by Elder Kevin Pearson, read it. It's completely amazing.
As always we are still working with our investigators and striving to find people to teach. Little stumbling stones always try to get in the way but in the end the Lord takes care of it. "Because He lives, there is always hope smiling brightly before us." Nothing could ever be truer than that.
I absolutely love being a missionary and having the opportunity to be here in Great Bend. This gospel makes everything okay.
I love each and every one of you. Be safe and have a wonderful week.
Sister Kenz.
